First phase of City's Edward Avenue homes progressing well

The City is pleased to announce that its well-located Edward Avenue housing project, which consists of 124 Breaking New Ground (BNG) housing units, is progressing well. Housing Consumer Education (HCE) sessions are already being held with qualifying beneficiaries to educate them on the responsibilities of home ownership.

‘This project, based in the Ottery - Grassy Park area, has seen some challenges with gang violence, extortion and criminality impacting the safety of teams on the ground. The City has rolled out additional interventions to address this and to reduce the risk of delays due to criminality and violence. The City remains committed to delivering safe, dignified housing to communities in need.

‘The Edward Avenue housing project is an important part of our commitment to providing housing and improving living conditions for our residents. Security challenges have impacted this very special  project, but we worked closely with stakeholders to keep the project moving forward. I am also pleased that education sessions are already being held to empower new beneficiaries with information about the practicalities of homeownership including budgeting, maintenance, drafting a will and the personal responsibilities of owning a property.

‘The City remains dedicated to transforming the lives of our residents through housing projects. Thank you to the community, contractors and project team for making this project possible,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Carl Pophaim.

Beneficiaries of City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City's Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
